Volodymyr Zelenskyy: Ukraine open to helping Ghana secure its borders with drones

Ukraine has expressed readiness to assist Ghana in strengthening its border security using advanced drone technology, as part of growing bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

This development follows a phone conversation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, during which the leaders explored deeper collaboration in areas such as agriculture, logistics and military cooperation.

“Special attention was given to cooperation in the field of advanced technologies, particularly UAVs. Ghana is interested in acquiring Ukrainian models for monitoring and surveillance to maintain security along its borders with the Sahel region,” the Ukrainian government said in an official statement.

President Zelenskyy confirmed Ukraine’s openness to supporting Ghana’s security efforts, especially in light of the threat posed by Islamist jihadist groups operating in the Sahel and northern Burkina Faso, near Ghana’s northern frontier.

“Ukraine is willing to help its partners make their borders more secure against terrorist threats from Islamist jihadists,” the statement added.

The northern part of Ghana shares a border with Burkina Faso, where Islamist militants have capitalised on the country’s political instability since a pro-Russian military junta seized power in 2022. The desert region has become a battleground between government forces and jihadist groups, raising concerns about cross-border infiltration into Ghanaian territory.

Security experts have previously warned that Ghana’s border areas are increasingly being used by extremist elements as logistical routes and safe havens. In response, the government has stepped up efforts to bolster national security, with support from international partners.

President Zelenskyy also welcomed President Mahama’s invitation to visit Ghana and extended a reciprocal invitation for the Ghanaian leader to make an official visit to Ukraine. The two leaders agreed to initiate a ministerial-level meeting to begin working on practical aspects of their collaboration.

Additionally, discussions were held on the possibility of constructing a logistics hub in Ghana for food storage, with Ukraine expressing its readiness to implement the initiative.
