Ghana placed in Pot 2 ahead of 2027 AFCON qualifying draw
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the four pots for the draw for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, with Ghana placed in Pot 2.
The 48 participating nations will discover their group-stage opponents when the draw is held at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association on Tuesday, May 19.
The next edition of the AFCON will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
Ghana is grouped in Pot 2 alongside Cape Verde, Guinea, Gabon, Uganda, Angola, Benin, Zambia, Mozambique, Madagascar, Equatorial Guinea and Comoros.
Pot 1 comprises Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Tunisia, Cameroon, DR Congo, Mali, South Africa and Burkina Faso, who will serve as the top seeds for the draw.
Pot 3 includes Kenya, Libya, Tanzania, Niger, Mauritania, The Gambia, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Togo, Malawi and Rwanda.
Meanwhile, Pot 4 features Zimbabwe, Guinea-Bissau, Congo, Central African Republic, Liberia, Burundi, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Botswana, South Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia.
Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have already secured places at the tournament as co-hosts, but they will still participate in the qualifying series.
Due to their automatic qualification, only one additional team will qualify from any group containing one of the three host nations. In the remaining groups, the top two teams will advance to the finals.
The Black Stars failed to qualify for the last edition of the tournament in Morocco, but will now discover their opponents as they begin the journey to secure a place at the next competition, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
