Korle Bu seeks information from Mzbel following social media claims about sister's death

The management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has appealed to musician Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah, popularly known as Mzbel, to provide information to assist an investigation into claims she made in a social media video concerning the circumstances surrounding her sister's death.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the hospital said it had become aware of a video in which Mzbel made claims relating to the medical care received by her late sister.

"Management wishes to assure the public that the Hospital treats all allegations concerning patient care with the utmost seriousness," the statement said.

The hospital said it has since made efforts to establish contact with Mzbel and her family to obtain further information that would enable it to verify the facts and conduct an appropriate review.

According to the statement, the hospital is seeking to establish the sequence of events, including whether the patient was referred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, whether she arrived at the facility, and the circumstances surrounding her care.

"As at the time of this notice, the Hospital has not been able to engage the family directly to verify the facts. Management is calling on Mzbel to provide the necessary information to enable us investigate the claims made in the video," the statement added.

The hospital stated that following President John Dramani Mahama's directive during the 2026 State of the Nation Address that no public hospital should refuse emergency cases, its Board directed management to ensure strict compliance with the policy. It added that the directive has also been reinforced by the Minister for Health.

Management said the hospital has increased bed capacity and expanded other facilities to help address bed shortages where possible, while reminding clinical and emergency departments of their obligation to provide emergency care in accordance with national policy.

"The Hospital would therefore regard any deliberate refusal to attend to an emergency patient as a serious breach of established policy and would investigate such conduct thoroughly," the statement said.

The hospital also reminded patients and their relatives that complaints may be lodged through its established channels, including its telephone exchange, a dedicated complaints line, its online complaints portal and QR codes displayed throughout the facility.

Management expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and reiterated its commitment to conducting a fair, transparent and professional review once the necessary information becomes available.
