VIDEO: 3 facing trial, kingpins on the run as $350million cocaine haul destroyed - Muntaka provides update

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has disclosed that cocaine valued at more than $300 million seized at Pedu Junction in the Central Region has been destroyed following a court order.

Appearing before Parliament's Assurance Committee on Tuesday, July 7, Muntaka confirmed that authorities followed due legal procedures before disposing of the narcotic substance and have provided video evidence of the destruction as proof of compliance.

He explained that narcotic substances cannot be destroyed without a court order and assured the committee that the required approval was obtained before the disposal process was carried out.

The Interior Minister also disclosed that three suspects are currently facing prosecution in connection with the seizure. He confirmed that the suspects, including the driver and mate of the vehicle, have been granted bail with their passports seized pending trial.

"Usually, we'll keep them, and when we start the court processing, they are made to put surety and all that. Their passports are usually seized, and then the court grants them bail once the case proceeds," Muntaka said.

He added that the driver and mate were among those arrested.

However, Muntaka acknowledged that the main kingpins are still at large and are being pursued through various measures, including the use of Interpol. "Obviously, when it happens like that, the main kingpins will be far away, but we are pursuing them, and like I said, we use all measures, especially with Interpol," he said.

The Minister noted that the substantive case is still before the court, with prosecution ongoing. The last adjourned date was April 13, and the parties were to reappear on June 29, but that date coincided with the devastating floods in Accra. The court is yet to set a new hearing date.

"So, the prosecution is ongoing, and we want to assure you that once we secure prosecution, we can update you on that," he added.

When asked about the street value of the drugs, Muntaka said: "Well, it was in the excess of $300 million."
