Enchi: Court fines unemployed man GH¢6,000 for stealing GH¢20,000
The Enchi District Magistrate Court has fined an unemployed man, Abraham William, also known as Abudu Hakim, GH¢6,000 for stealing GH¢20,000 belonging to a trader.
William was convicted on his own plea of guilty. In default of payment of the fine, he will serve 24 months in prison.
In addition to the fine, the court, presided over by His Worship Lawrance Buanor-Bue, ordered William to compensate the complainant, Genevieve Gyan, with GH¢15,000.
Prosecuting, Police Inspector Stephen Offei Asante told the court that the complainant, a trader based in Asankrangwa, knew the convict, who also lived in the same area.
He said on May 4, 2026, at about 9:30 a.m., William went to the Asankrangwa-Takoradi lorry station where the complainant operated a drinks shop and asked to be employed as a labourer.
According to the prosecution, the complainant agreed and instructed him to arrange items in the shop. Inspector Offei Asante said that when William left the shop around 1:00 p.m., the complainant later discovered that GH¢20,000 in cash—kept together with her daily sales had been stolen.
The prosecutor said the complainant suspected William and, while searching for him, received information that he was at a location where cannabis was allegedly being sold.
He said she went to the spot, where William was found, and with the help of bystanders, he was arrested and handed over to the Asankrangwa Police. Inspector Offei Asante added that William was re-arrested and cautioned, after which he admitted the offence and handed over GH¢13,200 in his possession to the police.
