For anyone familiar with the topsy-turvy nature of Uncle Ebo White’s survival on the theatre landscape, it is not difficult to conclude that ‘wires sometimes do touch’ in his creative head.

He took a loan to enable him stage his first play, ‘Devil’s Wife’ in 1998. He spent the following two years paying back the loan.

if that was not a grave enough lesson, he sold his car to finance his second play, ‘Mr President Your Move’ in 2000. He never made back enough money to buy a replacement.

‘As crazy as he was about theatre, he went ahead to work on a third production, ‘Wedding Behind Closed Door’ in 2002 and only broke even.

“When you are passionate about something, you always find a way around it. People don’t seem to remember that it was not the first time that I started to do this that it succeeded. I have been through failures,” the celebrated playwright told The Mirror in a chat.

“I had options to quit and do something else but I kept on coming back to theatre.”

Well, it seems he finally managed to fashion out how to win the hearts of audiences and his latest production is titled ‘Bananas and Groundnuts.’

It will be staged at the National Theatre on August 28, 29 and 30 at 4.00pm and 8.00pm daily and again on September 5 and 6 at the same venue and times.

“This new play is about the choices we make, the basis for making those choices and the consequences of those choices,” was all the man was immediately ready to say about the impending production.

In terms of choices, he is completely satisfied with those who work with him daily and are collectively called The Roverman Team.

He praises them at all times and even considers himself blessed to be surrounded by such creative people.

“I constantly tap into their creativity, intellect and imagination so every work becomes a collaborative piece. They are good guys and it is always wonderful to be around them,” Ebo White says.

It would be wonderful to see what that highly-praised collaborative spirit has come up with this time around in ‘Groundnuts and Bananas.’
