EDITOR’S LENS: A call to fund Black Star Experience

The launch of the Black Star Experience, Ghana's flagship tourism initiative in May 2025 was met with excitement and anticipation.

It aims to redefine Ghanaian identity, attract investment, create jobs, and boost tourism through year-round celebrations of culture, arts, and education.

However, its Coordinator, Rex Owusu Marfo, popularly known as Rex Omar, has revealed that most of the secretariat's planned projects were not executed in 2025 due to a lack of budgetary allocation.

Established after the 2025 budget was read, the Black Star Experience secretariat was not included in the budget, hindering its operations.

As an office within the presidency, it relies on clearance from the Presidency for activities, severely limiting its scope.

The Black Star Experience was key in the then-opposition National Democratic Congress’s manifesto to drive tourism and elevate the creative industry.

President John Mahama emphasised the government’s commitment to the project at the official launch last year.

The Black Star Experience is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including job creation, investment and cultural exchange. It will also promote Ghana's rich cultural heritage, support local artists and creatives, and contribute to the country's GDP.

Hence, the lack of funding for the Black Star Experience Secretariat is indeed a concern, given its potential to transform Ghana's tourism sector.

Despite challenges, Rex Omar disclosed in a recent interview that the secretariat used 2025 to lay groundwork, sign MoUs and organise initiatives such as Creative Connect Afrika and Taste the Culture in December last year.

He revealed that a budget had also been presented and defended for 2026, offering hope for improved execution.

Graphic Showbiz urges the government to prioritise funding for the Black Star Experience. This initiative can position Ghana as Africa's cultural capital, driving economic growth and job creation.

The government must not just ‘shout’ about it but act accordingly by recognising the Black Star Experience's potential and allocating necessary resources.

With adequate funding, the Black Star Experience can shine, showcasing Ghana's rich culture and heritage to the world.

Let’s walk the talk!
