GHAMRO set to hold election next month

The five-member interim board appointed last year to oversee the administration of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) has set Wednesday, February 11, for the election of a new GHAMRO board.

Mr. Kwame Nsiah-Apau, popularly known as Okyeame Kwame, a member of the interim board made the announcement at a press conference yesterday, at the GHAMRO office in Accra.

Speaking on behalf of the board, Mr Nsiah-Apau said he was hopeful the election of the new board would help bring an end to the rivalry that had emerged after the court dissolved the previous board headed by Carlos Sakyi last year.

According to him, the elections will be held in various locations across the country.  The locations are the CIBT Social Advance, the Apatakese Ase at the Cultural Centre in Accra and Kumasi respectively and the Tamale Cultural Centre will be the venue for those in the Northern sector.

Mr. Abraham Neutey Adjatey, an administrator for the interim board, outlined the fees for contesting the various positions at the press conference yesterday.

“The Board Chairman position will go for GH¢500, Vice Chairman for GH¢400 and the Board Members for GHC300,” he stated.

Mr Adjatey described their six month tenure in office as the most challenging with staunch opposition from the previous board members and other GHAMRO members who had differing views on their position and role as board.

“It is important to mention that during the past six-months stay in office; we had no access to funds as the defendants, had a no debit placed on the GHAMRO account which made it difficult to manage and organise a substantive election as we were mandated by the court to,” he noted.

A five member interim board was appointed by a court in June last year after some members of GHAMRO, including ace highlife artiste, Amakye Dede, sued the previous board.

Last year, the interim board, made up of Nana Aboagye Da Costa, Chairman, Dorothy Habbadda, SecretaryKow Seesah Acquaye, Kwame Nsiah-Appau and Enock Agyepong, set December 6 to hold the elections but a court action brought against it by GHAMRO members Rex Boateng and George Dickson halted it.

The interim board, also acting as receiver managers, were tasked by the court to oversee the election of a substantive board within six months of their appointment.
