Gospel musician Yaw Sarpong reported dead
Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has passed away at Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he was receiving medical treatment.
The news of death was reported by close family sources with some of his friends in the creative industry including sound engineer, Fred Kyei Mensah popularly known as Fredyma confirming it in a Facebook post.
He was a pioneer of Ghanaian gospel music and led the Asomafo Gospel Band to produce timeless classics, earning him immense respect in the Christian community and music industry. Many younger gospel artistes cite him as a major influence.
His death comes barely a month after the passing of Maame Tiwa, a key member of the Asomafo group, leaving the gospel music fraternity in mourning. (Related article: Maame Tiwaa of Asomafo fame passes on)
His decades-long career earned him huge respect in the Christian community and music industry, inspiring many young gospel artistes who cite him as a key influence
Yaw Sarpong received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards for his contributions to gospel music.
Already, tributes are pouring in for the artiste whose contribution to Ghanaian gospel music will be remembered for generations to come.

You did your best for the Gospel Industry. I have known you for the past 48 years.
Your death is a big blow as when we are also mourning Maame Tiwaa whom you sang with for almost 50 years.
