Akua Tokunboh, a pharmacist based in the USA, beat 10 other contestants to emerge winner of the competition held at the Alvin Ailey theatre, in New York, in July, this year.

In an interview with Showbiz, she revealed that she selected the topic of diabetes awareness because of her grandmother who passed away due to complications arising from the disease while she (Akua) was studying abroad.

“From personal experiences as a Board Certified Pharmacist in the United States, I monitor medication use of patients in an underserved area on a daily basis. I have observed diabetes on the rise and have noted the need for the proper management of diabetes, so that any fatal yet avoidable complications can be addressed and prevented,” she said.

According to the President and founder of the Miss Ghana USA pageant, Gloria Opare, Akua’s fun personality resonated with the crowd from the moment she stepped on stage and it was no surprise when she was announced as the winner of the competition.

She described Akua Torkunboh as the embodiment of the Miss Ghana USA brand, which is that of the African Queen who is hardworking, resourceful, resilient, creative, humble and relatable.

Born to a Nigerian father and Ghanaian mother, Akua was raised and educated in Ghana before leaving for the United States shortly after graduating from Alsyd Academy in Dzorwulu, Accra.

She moved with her parents and sister to the United States where she attended Bishop Carroll High School.

She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Business from Wichita State University as well as a Doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of Kansas.
