POPULAR radio presenter and Disc Jockey (DJ), Harey Adjoa Owusu Kusi aka Ohemaa Woyeje of Angel 102.9FM, Accra will officially attend this year’s Juneteenth event in New York City, USA, from Friday, June 16-18.

This year, the three-day festival celebrated over the years to mark black empowerment is under the theme, Kaleidoscope of Black Culture.

Juneteenth festival is New York City’s leading and largest annual event created to empower the Black community, advance the economic and cultural arts in underserved areas as well as champion small, Black-owned businesses.

Since its inception 14 years ago, a number of artistes have headlined the festival and this year will have Emmy nominated singer/songwriter, Julian King entertaining patrons.

Attendees of the event will experience the best in black culture and community with live performances, exhibitions, authentic local cuisine, wellness and other family fun activities.

This year’s sponsors are continuing to enhance the work being done in and around the Black communities in the area and throughout the country.

According to Ohemaa Woyeje, she wias invited to this year’s event as an African representation for a festival that celebrates Black emancipation and empowerment.

“As one representing Africa, I will use Angel 102.9fm and Angel TV to promote the signifcance of the festival. Personally, it will help me to widen my network while gaining more knowledge for my career pursuits,” she said.

Juneteenth has grown and expanded exponentially from a local gathering to a nationally recognised event with this year’s attendees expected to reach over 37,000.

The festival celebrates the day African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and in 2021, the festival was recognised as a commemorative holiday by Denver City Council.

Participating partners for Juneteenth include Airbnb, Atlantic Terminal Mall, Black Restaurant Coalition, Brooklyn Nets, Brooklyn Navy Yard, The Drivers Cooperative, The Home Depot Foundation, Liberty Coca Cola Beverages, New York Liberty, NY State of Health, PacSun and Visa.
