Looming catastrophic danger: Ageing giant mahogany trees across Darkuman Ziggy, Methodist Junction
In the past few weeks, one of the giant mahogany trees has been shedding its green leaves and the trunk is getting brown, and 'skeletal'.
The danger now is that any strong wind would send it crashing down.
In the past seven months, this particular area witnessed four huge mahogany trees falling from their roots, resulting in trunks and huge branches falling across the street onto roofs of private houses.
I am a mother. Our school children wait under these trees at the zebra crossing to be assisted by a Lolipop man.
This road is a busy road with lots of vehicular activity. Petrol and gas tankers use this road all the time, as well as private cars, commercial vehicles, trotros and buses.
A host of commercial activities take place all the time on this road. God forbid if any of these trees crash down during the rush hours.
It will send live electric transmission lines overhead down, with the possibility of electrocution.
I ask the authorities, including the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), to quickly come to our aid to sort out this looming catastrophe.
Those trees are old, and they are forest trees too; not fit for urban centres.
This is an urgent plea. I urge the Municipal Director or his deputy and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) of Ablekuman North District Assembly, Mataheko, to act swiftly.
