MTN Ghana restores data bundle services after technical disruption on launch day of new offers
MTN Ghana has confirmed that it has fully resolved the technical issues that disrupted data bundle purchases earlier on July 1, 2025, the same day new enhanced data offers were officially rolled out across the telecom sector.
In an official statement, MTN informed its customers that normal service had resumed. “MTN is pleased to inform our cherished customers that we have restored our data bundle purchase channels. As of 11pm today, 1st July 2025, customers can purchase data bundles to receive the 15% additional volume of data via the following channels: *138#, *170#, *567#, and the myMTN App,” the statement read.
However, the company noted that data bundle purchases through the MoMo app remain temporarily unavailable and apologised for the inconvenience caused by the earlier disruption. “We truly appreciate your patience and understanding during this period,” the telecom giant added.
The resolution follows an earlier announcement by MTN that it had encountered a major technical issue while implementing the new 15 per cent data volume bonus, which had rendered customers temporarily unable to buy data bundles. The glitch coincided with the start of new directives from the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, requiring all three major telecom providers—MTN Ghana, Telecel Ghana, and AT Ghana—to offer more data at no additional cost.
Under the new pricing structure, MTN was expected to restore its GH¢399 bundle to provide 214 gigabytes of data, reversing a previous downgrade to 92.88 gigabytes at GH¢350. The company also committed to increasing the value of all existing data bundles by 15 per cent in compliance with government policy.
Meanwhile, competitors Telecel and AT Ghana successfully rolled out their upgraded bundles without incident. Telecel’s GH¢400 package now provides 250 gigabytes, up from 90 GB, while AT Ghana’s equivalent offer increased from 195 GB to 236 GB. Both networks have implemented a 10 per cent bonus on their data offerings.
Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George, who announced the reforms last month, emphasised the importance of improved consumer value and sector balance. “The increases are going to come at considerable costs to the network operators. However, I am glad that our engagements and consultations are bearing fruit for the Ghanaian people,” he said.
He also tasked the National Communications Authority (NCA) with enforcing compliance and conducting quarterly billing integrity tests to ensure transparency and accuracy across all operators.
Although MTN’s technical setback briefly delayed customer access to the enhanced bundles, the company’s restoration of services late on Tuesday now clears the way for users to enjoy the anticipated benefits.
With the reforms now in effect across all three networks, Ghanaians can expect greater data value and a renewed push for affordable digital connectivity in the months ahead.
