Marriage should not be seen as a poverty alleviation scheme, according to Nollywood actress Nancy Isime, who has stressed the importance of financial stability in relationships and marriage.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Tea With Tay podcast, the actress argued that while love is essential, it is often difficult for couples to enjoy marriage and family life when they are constantly burdened by financial struggles.
“Marriage is not a poverty alleviation scheme,” Isime stated, adding that she does not believe marrying a poor man automatically guarantees a woman a fulfilling life.
According to her, financial hardships such as unpaid rent, inability to cater for children's education and the lack of basic necessities can place immense strain on relationships.
“When rent is due, school fees can’t be paid and there is no food in the house, it is difficult to have a fantastic life,” she explained.
While acknowledging that genuine love can exist regardless of one's financial status, Isime maintained that love alone does not necessarily translate into a comfortable or fulfilling life.
“I am not saying there is no love without money. But love and a fantastic life are not the same,” she said.
The actress therefore encouraged intending couples to attain a reasonable level of financial stability before embarking on marriage and starting a family.
