Breaking News: Fire guts Makola No.2 Mall

The Makola No.2 shopping centre has been gutted by fire. It was not clear what started the Friday morning fire but firemen are at the scene trying to control it.

The fire is said to have started around 4:30am.

A variety of items including clothing and foodstuffs are sold in the market.

There is worry that the fire could spread to a fuel station located inside the market and cause more havoc.

Security officials are preventing traders who want to enter the market in an attempt to salvage their goods from doing so.

Plumes of thick smoke early morning billowed from the market amidst wailing and yelling by traders who say they fear the worst for their goods.  

Scores of people have converged in front of the market. This is the second fire outbreak at the Makola No.2 market within a year, after a similar fire in June last year.
