Court remands Ekow Black as police probe fresh sextortion claims

A district court in Accra has ordered the remand of social media personality Christford Affadu Danful, known as Ekow Black, as police widen investigations into a viral assault video to cover new claims of sextortion.

Danful appeared before the Adabraka District Court on Friday, January 16, 2026.

The presiding magistrate, Nana Abena Asoh Owusu Omenyo, remanded him into police custody and adjourned the case to January 21, 2026.

The order follows ongoing police investigations into an earlier incident in which Danful was captured in a video allegedly assaulting a woman. The footage spread widely on social media, sparked public anger, and led to his arrest by the Ghana Police Service.

In an update issued on Sunday, January 18, 2026, the Police said the case had expanded.

Investigators are now examining claims that the suspect threatened to release intimate images of the woman involved. Police said the conduct under review fits the description of sextortion.

Danful was arrested on Thursday, January 15, 2026, after an intelligence-led operation by the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Cyber Vetting Team. Police said initial findings pointed to a strained relationship between the suspect and the woman in the video, marked by repeated disputes.

Police have not released details on the new claims but said investigations continue.

The case has drawn wide public interest, especially among Ghanaians worried about domestic abuse, online exploitation, and the influence of social media personalities.

The Police Service said it will pursue reports of violence and exploitation, regardless of the public profile of those involved.
