A fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company's (GRIDCo) Mallam Substation has disrupted power supply to parts of Accra, the company has confirmed.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, GRIDCo said a fault occurred at the substation at 2.36 a.m. that day, resulting in a fire outbreak on one of the transformers at the station. The incident disrupted power supply to parts of Accra served by the substation.
The Ghana National Fire Service responded to the incident and successfully contained and extinguished the fire. According to the GNFS, communities including Lapaz, Anyaa and Awoshie are likely to be affected by the power disruption.
GRIDCo said power supply had been restored to parts of the affected areas, while efforts continued to restore supply to the remaining areas as quickly as possible.
The company said its engineers were investigating the cause of the fire, and that a process had been initiated to replace the affected transformer as soon as possible.
"GRIDCo sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused and thanks all affected customers and stakeholders for their patience and understanding," the statement said.
The statement was issued by the Corporate Communications Section of the company.
GRIDCo was incorporated in December 2006 to carry out the economic dispatching and transmission of electricity from facilities of wholesale suppliers to bulk customers and distribution utilities in Ghana and West Africa.
The company became operational on August 1, 2008, following the transfer of the Transmission System Department and its core staff from the Volta River Authority.
It operates the National Interconnected Transmission System and currently transmits electricity to thirty-one bulk customers and distribution utilities from eleven wholesale suppliers, including the Volta River Authority.
