A fire outbreak involving a cargo truck at Budumburam in the Central Region on Saturday evening was successfully brought under control by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), with no casualties recorded.
According to the GNFS, a distress call was received at about 8:16 pm that a cargo truck with registration number GS 2379-23 had caught fire.
Although the Budumburam Fire Station had an engine that was out of service at the time, firefighters led by Station Officer II Takyi responded promptly, deploying portable fire extinguishers to contain the blaze.
Reinforcements from the Kasoa Fire Station later joined the operation, and the fire was fully extinguished at approximately 10:29 pm.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the truck was transporting hazardous materials, including firecrackers, in violation of the Explosives (Importation) Instrument, E.I. 21 of 1999.
Fire officials suspect that improper storage of the hazardous cargo may have led to spontaneous ignition.
The truck was largely salvaged, suffering only minor smoke damage. The incident has since been reported to the Police for further investigation.
