She said for children to grow up to become responsible leaders, there was the need for governments to provide them with the needed socio-economic support.

Speaking at  an event  organised by the First Lady of Cote d’Ivoire, Mrs Dominique Ouattara, to donate items to the General Hospital of Yopougon in Abidjan, Mrs Mahama said being a mother, she was very passionate about issues concerning children, especially their education and health.

Advocacy

"I can only encourage you, my sister, to keep up with your support and advocacy for the women and children of Cote d’Ivoire" she said.

Mrs Mahama said the development of any country depended on the good health of its people, which started with the family unit.

“We have to improve the general well-being of vulnerable sections of our population, especially children and women," she stated.

She emphasised that children brought to the hospital must be given urgent medical attention.

Service delivery

The First Lady said her organisation, the Lordina Foundation, had been supporting health facilities in rural communities to enhance health service delivery to women and children.

"With the support of MedShare USA, we have supported facilities with vital medical supplies and equipment to complement government’s efforts," she said.

She commended Mrs Ouattara for her passion to bring hope to the poor and the needy.

"I share the same passion and over the years I have dedicated myself to helping to lift the poor and the vulnerable in my country. Just like you, I support many needy students and provide comfort for thousands of orphans," she said.

She commended the medical officers and other personnel of the hospital for their hard work and commitment and advised them to continue to work hard.

Delivery systems

Mrs Mahama expressed her commitment to the improvement of healthcare systems and also to ensure a reduction and elimination of maternal and infant deaths.

For her part, the First Lady of Cote d’Ivoire also commended Mrs Mahama for her selfless service to humanity and urged her to continue with her support for the vulnerable and the less-privileged in society.

After presenting the items, which included office furniture, computers, wheelchairs, baby’s cots and carriers, ward partition stands, diapers, made-in-Ghana chocolate, rice grown and packed in Ghana, drinks, hospital clothing, among other things, to the hospital, the two First Ladies toured the Maternity and Paediatric units to interact with the children and women on admission.
