Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has announced the passing of his father, George Gyan Baffour Mensah, paying an emotional tribute on social media.
The former Sunderland and Al Ain striker shared the heartbreaking news with a message expressing gratitude for his father's support throughout his life and career.
"I'm happy you saw my greatness dad. Thank you for taking care of us. You will forever be in our hearts. R.I.P. (ASASE J)," Gyan wrote.
According to Gyan's post, his father was born on June 29, 1944, and passed away on June 29, 2026, his 82nd birthday.
Gyan did not disclose the cause of death, but his post quickly drew an outpouring of condolences from footballers, fans and well-wishers, many of whom offered messages of support to the former Black Stars captain.
Widely regarded as one of Ghana's greatest footballers, Gyan enjoyed a distinguished career spanning more than two decades, becoming the Black Stars' all-time leading scorer and representing the country at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and FIFA World Cups.
His father was a constant figure throughout much of his football journey, supporting him from his early years to his rise as one of Africa's most celebrated players.
His post triggered an outpouring of condolence messages from the football community, including his former teammates Prince Tagoe, Razak Pimpong and Felix Afena-Gyan.
