Forgery suspect pulls gun on police investigator outside court
The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 53-year-old man, Seth Welbeck, for allegedly threatening a police investigator with a loaded pistol outside an Accra Circuit Court.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, February 3, shortly after Welbeck had appeared before the court in connection with a document forgery case.
According to a police press release, the suspect requested permission to lock his vehicle while he was being escorted to the court cells.
In the process, Welbeck allegedly retrieved a Smith & Wesson SD9 VE pistol loaded with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition from his vehicle and pointed it at the investigator, threatening his life.
The investigator, with the assistance of court officials and members of the public present, swiftly disarmed and subdued the suspect, averting what could have escalated into a more serious situation.
Welbeck is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, and is expected to be arraigned before court.
The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against acts of violence, the unlawful possession of firearms and the obstruction of justice, warning that such conduct will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
