Future of 270 nursing students in danger

The fate of 270 students of the St John of God Nursing Training College at Sefwi Asafo in the Western Region hangs in the balance, as their school is yet to be accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB).

The school started operating in October last year.

The Western Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, has, therefore, appealed through the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, to safeguard the future of the nursing students.

He made the appeal when the deputy minister paid a courtesy call on him in Takoradi yesterday.

The deputy minister is in the region on a two-day working visit. He is accompanied by the members of the Ebola Emergency Operations Team who will assess the preparedness of the Western Region to contain the disease  in case it breaks out in Ghana.

Situation on the ground

According to the Western Regional Minister, the St John of God Nursing College was established by the Asafo community and the local Catholic Church to train the youth in nursing.

He said the fear now was that if by mid-January when the indexing of schools which had been accredited was done and the school missed out, the future of the students would hang in the balance.

He said although the school authorities had written to the NAB for accreditation, they were yet to receive any positive response.

Pledge to help

Dr Bampoe, in his response, said although it was wrong for the school to have started operating without accreditation, the harm had already been done and, therefore, there was the need to remedy the situation.

He assured the minister that he would present the case before the Minister of Health for redress.
