The National Identification Authority will begin charging GH¢200 for Ghana Card replacement at its district offices from Monday, February 2, 2026.

The Authority announced the new charges in a press release issued on Monday, January 26, 2026.

The statement said the fees had been approved by Parliament under the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025, L.I. 2512, in November 2025.

Under the revised structure, first-time applicants aged 25 years and above will pay GH¢30 at district offices, while registration for persons below 25 years will remain free. Annual card renewal at district offices will cost GH¢150. A nationality update will attract a GH¢200 charge.

The NIA said record updates without card replacement would remain free at district offices. Record updates that involve card replacement will cost GH¢200. Card transfer services, excluding courier services, will cost GH¢75.

For services under the Foreigner Identification Management System, first-time registration will cost the cedi equivalent of 120 United States dollars. Annual card renewal will cost the cedi equivalent of 78 dollars. Multiple-year renewal for a minimum of two years will cost the cedi equivalent of 75 dollars per year. Card replacement will cost the cedi equivalent of 78 dollars. A nationality update will cost the cedi equivalent of 120 dollars, while record updates with card replacement will cost the cedi equivalent of 70 dollars. Record updates without replacement will remain free.

At NIA Premium Centres, first-time registration will cost GH¢410. Card replacement will cost GH¢520. Record updates with card replacement, nationality updates and card renewal will each cost GH¢410. Record updates without card replacement will cost GH¢165.

Explaining the reason for the adjustments, the Authority said the review followed provisions under the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022, Act 1080, which requires public institutions to periodically review their fees in line with economic and operational conditions.

“The NIA has operated under the 2023 fee structure for over two years, during which operating costs have increased cumulatively without corresponding fee adjustments,” the statement said.

It listed technology licensing, cybersecurity services, utilities, logistics and personnel costs as major cost drivers which, according to the Authority, remain high and largely irreversible.

The statement added that the Ghana Card has become part of the country’s national infrastructure and maintaining it over the long term requires periodic fee adjustments after extended periods of cost absorption.

The release was signed by Mr Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate of the National Identification Authority.
