The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has inaugurated the governing boards of the National Disaster Management Organsation (NADMO) and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) with a call on the members to work as united teams, guided by the principles of transparency, accountability, professionalism and patriotism.

He also tasked them to approach their duties with boldness and humility while bringing their diverse perspectives and experiences to bear on the boards.

The NADMO Board is chaired by the Member of Parliament for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem (KEEA) Constituency, Dr Samuel Atta Mills.

“Whether it is natural, health emergencies, or human-induced crises, the efficiency and effectiveness of NADMO's response systems have a direct bearing on our national resilience and stability.

“Today marks a new chapter in the governance of disaster risk management in Ghana.

The Governing Council is not only expected to provide policy direction but also to support the management of NADMO in achieving its strategic objectives.

Your collective wisdom and leadership will be instrumental in ensuring that NADMO remains responsive, well-resourced, innovative and aligned with global best practices,” he said.

Alhaji Muntaka said he expected the council to strengthen the coordination between NADMO and other relevant agencies, including the security services, local government structures and international partners.

“You are also charged with ensuring that NADMO’s operations are people-centered—placing communities at the heart of disaster preparedness, response, recovery and risk reduction efforts,” he said.

To the council members, he said: “The task ahead of you is significant, but not insurmountable. I urge you to work as a united team, guided by the principles of transparency, accountability, professionalism and patriotism. You must be bold in your decisions, inclusive in your approach, and strategic in your oversight.”

Alhaji Muntaka assured the board of its full support in the execution of its mandate

“Your selection to serve on this Governing Council is a recognition of your distinguished careers, your proven track records in leadership and public service, and your commitment to the wellbeing of our nation,” he said.

NACOC

Regarding the NACOC Governing Board, the minister said its inauguration came at a time rigorous efforts were being made to combat the various threats posed by illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs.

That, he said, had become a matter of grave national and international concern.

"Illicit drug trafficking has become one of the most persistent and destructive threats confronting our society, especially the youth who are our future.

"Drug trafficking is a transnational organised crime that recognises no borders, and no regard for human life.

Its consequences are vicious. It increases insecurity, affecting our economy, destroying families and undermines the health and productivity of our citizens, particularly our youth," he said.

Gravity

The gravity of the challenge, he said, demanded a logical, consistent, tactical and sustained institutional response.

He said any organisation that wanted to successfully and responsibly serve the public must have a strong governance structure in place.

Alhaji Mubarak said the inauguration of the board was evidence of the government’s unwavering commitment to openness, proficiency and professionalism in the fight against illicit narcotics drugs.

He told the new members that their appointment reflected the confidence that the President had in their expertise, dedication to service and commitment.
