NLC halts JUSAG’s intended strike, summons Judicial Service, Finance Ministry

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has halted the intended industrial action by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) and summoned the Judicial Service and the Ministry of Finance to appear before it on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, over unpaid salary arrears.

The directive followed a notice of intended industrial action issued by JUSAG on January 12, 2026, and served on the NNLC on January 13, 2026 in which the association expressed dissatisfaction over the non-payment of eight months’ salary arrears.

In a letter dated January 14, 2026, and signed by its acting Executive Secretary, Dr Bernice A. Welbeck, the commission directed the Judicial Secretary and the Ministry of Finance to apprise it of the status of the workers’ demands within three working days upon receipt of the summons.

It urged the association to stay the intended action and appear before it as scheduled for a hearing of the issues in dispute.

“The National Labour Commission, in exercise of its powers under Section 139 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), writes to summon the parties to appear before the commission on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. for a hearing of the issues in dispute,” the letter read.

Background

JUSAG had earlier announced plans to embark on an indefinite strike over the failure of government to pay outstanding salary arrears owed to its members.

The association said the arrears had remained unpaid despite engagements with the relevant state institutions, prompting it to invoke the provisions of the Labour Act by serving notice of an intended industrial action.

JUSAG also maintained that the delay in settling the arrears had placed financial strain on its members.
