Ghana Queen Mother's Foundation leads campaign against hate speech

The Ghana Queen Mother's Foundation, in partnership with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), the Musicians Union of Ghana, and Royal TV, has launched a nationwide campaign to combat hate speech in the political landscape.

The initiative, titled "Decency in Politics," aims to promote respect and civility in political discourse across the country.

During the launch today in Accra, the Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, Akwasi Agyeman, emphasized that Ghana’s peace and stability are key attractions for tourists and vital characteristics of the nation.

“People who want to visit Ghana see it as a beacon of peace, and we pride ourselves on being one of the most peaceful countries in the sub-region,” he said.

Mr. Agyeman highlighted that political discourse should be conducted peacefully, adding that the rise of hate speech during this election season threatens the country’s peace, which could negatively impact the anticipated influx of tourists.

“For tourism to thrive, there must be peace. We are in a political season, but politics should not divide us. We must be able to share our ideas peacefully,” he added.

Nana Serwaa Brakatuo, a representative of the Queen Mothers Foundation, called on all Ghanaians and the media to actively promote the message of peace, especially in this election year.

“You have only one thumb for voting, so why engage in violence? Elections are not warfare; they are an expression of your opinion. As mothers and grandmothers, we care deeply for our children and urge everyone to come together for peace, which is a priceless commodity that cannot be purchased,” she said.

The Second Vice President of the Musicians Union of Ghana and head of the Women’s Desk, Ruth Amankwah Gyamfi, commended the Queen Mothers for leading the peace campaign.

She expressed enthusiasm about women taking a leading role in the initiative, saying, “I am thrilled that our wonderful Queen Mothers are spearheading this effort. As head of the Women’s Desk at MUSIGA, I am committed to promoting women’s leadership because when women rise up, significant change occurs.”
