President John Dramani Mahama, supported by the Togolese President, Mr Faure Gnassingbé, inaugurated the centre in a brief ceremony at GIMPA yesterday.

The Atta Mills Centre for Law and Governance is an institution of excellence established by GIMPA in honour of the good works of the late Prof Mills, both as a President and a professor of Law.

The centre will undertake high quality research and come out with theories in matters of law, governance, public policy, as well as advocacy and advisory services, to fill a major need for such services in Ghana, the West African sub-region and Africa in general.

A director and a coordinator in charge of administration will be appointed to lead the intellectual activities of the centre, while its management and operations will be under the supervision of a joint team of the deans of the Faculty of Law and the School of Public Services and Governance at GIMPA.

President Mahama

President Mahama commended GIMPA for honouring the man under whom he served as Vice-President, saying, "This is a testament of his contribution to public service and academia."

He said Prof Mills was passionate about improving Ghana's governance architecture, adding, "His transparency in public service was unquestionable."

The President also touched on the tremendous discipline Prof. Mills carried along in his life time, saying, "I benefited a lot from him."

He stated that the late President's commitment to academic enterprise was never in doubt and so it was most appropriate that the centre had been named after him.

He expressed the hope that the centre would work to fortify the bipartisan nature of the country and promote democratic governance.

Rector

The Rector of GIMPA, Prof. Franklin Achampong Manu, eulogised the late President, saying he was an epitome of excellence in public service and academia.

He said Prof. Mills served his country well and showed extraordinary commitment to the teaching of Law.

He said the study of governance was central to several contemporary issues.
