Japan Week celebration kicks off Friday

The 2019 Japanese Week celebration, which is to foster unity and promote cultural exchanges between the Ghanaian and Japanese communities begins in Accra on Friday, November 8, 2019.

Organised by the Japanese Embassy in Ghana, the event would also celebrate Japanese culture through sports, dance and other social events in a way that fosters unity and social engagements.

The activities include a joint workshop between Ghana and Japan, which comes off on Friday, a Study in Japan Fair, sporting competitions in Judo, Karate and Kengo, the Japan cultural day, and the Yosakoi Dance Festival.

Speaking to Graphic.com.gh in his office, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Tsutomu Himeno said the Japan Week is one of the important events on the calendar of the Embassy.

He called on the public to participate in the events that are opened to the general public especially, the sporting events.

Mr Himeno said the Japanese government is promoting the study of the Japanese language and culture in Ghanaian universities.

The move, will among other benefits, enable young graduates to take advantage of job opportunities in Japanese companies in Ghana.

Mr Himeno indicated that the Japanese government was encouraging more Japanese companies to establish their presence in Ghana and knowledge of the Japanese language and culture would be an added advantage for young graduates who may be seeking job opportunities in the companies.

Currently, the Ambassador said, the University of Ghana and the Regional Maritime University are undertaking courses in the Japanese language and added that the course would be extended to other universities.

Japanese companies operating in Ghana presently number 54, but the Ambassador said the Japanese government was encouraging more to come.

Mr Himeno said more Ghanaian students were also being encouraged to enroll in Japanese universities to undertake studies in mostly the sciences.
