Latvia responds to Ghana’s request over death of Ghanaian student

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally responded to Ghana’s request for information regarding investigations into the tragic death of a Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei, in Latvia.

The development follows reports, including a widely circulated video, alleging the killing of a Ghanaian student identified as Nana Adjei in Latvia.

Upon receiving the information, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately initiated investigations through the appropriate diplomatic channels.

Mr Ablakwa has since met with the family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, assuring them of the government’s commitment to uncovering the facts surrounding the incident. He further informed the family that a fact-finding mission would be dispatched from Ghana’s Embassy in Germany, which holds concurrent accreditation to Latvia, to support the investigations.

According to the Minister, Latvian authorities have indicated their readiness to receive the Ghanaian delegation in Riga on January 20, 2026, to facilitate direct engagement and cooperation.

“I promised regular updates in the interest of transparency, accountability and justice, and I shall continue to do just that,” Mr Ablakwa stated. “As I have reiterated, the Mahama administration values every Ghanaian life, whether at home or abroad, and we are prepared to do whatever it takes to safeguard the dignity of all Ghanaians.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured the public that it will continue to work closely with Latvian authorities and keep the family and the nation informed as investigations progress.
