Mahama to hold first presidential media encounter on Wednesday

President John Dramani Mahama will on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, hold his first Presidential Media Encounter since taking office in January.

A statement issued on Monday, September 8, 2025, and signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the event would take place at the Jubilee House at 8 p.m.

According to the statement, the encounter will provide a platform for President Mahama to engage the public, through the media, on national issues, his Resetting Ghana Agenda, as well as ongoing policies and projects.

It added that accredited journalists would have the chance to put questions directly to the President on a wide range of subjects.

During his previous administration between 2012 and 2016, President Mahama held a number of such interactions with the press, including a major session at the Flagstaff House on January 12, 2016, to mark his third year in office.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also continued the practice, meeting the press at least four times during his presidency,  in July 2017, January 2018, December 2018, and December 2019, where he responded to questions on the economy, governance, and infrastructure.

This week’s engagement follows a meeting President Mahama held with the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) at the Jubilee House, where he reaffirmed his support for press freedom.

At that meeting, the President expressed concern about Ghana’s fall on the global press freedom index, linking it partly to harassment of journalists and incidents such as the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

“We need to ensure that people, when they do that kind of thing, face sanctions or are punished,” President Mahama said, adding that his administration would work to restore Ghana’s standing as a beacon of media freedom.

He also condemned the frequent harassment of journalists by security officers and announced plans to establish a formal forum for dialogue between the media and security agencies to ensure reporters operate without intimidation.

The Presidency said it looked forward to an engaging and substantive session with the press on Wednesday.
