Man jailed 40 years for robbery
An Accra circuit court Monday sentenced an unemployed man, Abass Suleman, to 40 years in prison for robbery.

The court also remanded in prison custody four other persons charged with dishonestly receiving stolen items.
The accused persons are Issah Mohammed, Sulemana Mobarik, Prince Kuadadze and Mohammed Kassina and they are to reappear on March 17, 2014.
Facts of the Case
Police Chief Superintendent Duuti Tuaruka told the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, that the complainant is a German national residing at Klangon, near Sakumono in Accra, while the accused persons also resided in the same area.
He said about 2:40 p.m. on February 23, 2014, the complainant was returning home from town holding a black bag which contained a Toshiba laptop and a green ladies’ purse in which she had her credit card, health insurance card and cash of GHc48.
The prosecution said about 20 metres to her home, Abass emerged from a nearby bush behind the complainant, pushed her to the ground, forcibly collected the bag and bolted.
He said the complainant screamed for help and a ‘Good Samaritan’ went to her aid and the case was reported to the police.
Upon a tip off, the police arrested Abass at his hideout at Klangon and he led the police to arrest the other accused persons from whom the items were retrieved.

Before passing sentence, Mr Obiri said robbery was on the increase and that such criminals should be kept away from society for a very long time.
He said apart from the punitive effect of the sentence, it was also to serve as a deterrent to the youth who were considering indulging in robbery as a lucrative venture.
