Rafiki Village appeals for support

The Director of the Methodist Rafiki Village at Gyaahadze, near Winneba in the Central Region, Very Rev. Ekow Sey, has appealed to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other benevolent organisations to assist the home to rebuild three of its apartments  that were gutted by fire about a month ago.

The fire, which started around 2 p.m, destroyed foodstuffs and other property worth thousands of cedis at the main kitchen, storeroom and the laundry.

Rev. Sey made the appeal during a visit by members of the Abeka Circuit of the Methodist Church to the home to present assorted items as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Redemption Methodist Church and 10 years of the Abeka Circuit.

Rev. Sey said the disaster had made the running of the home very difficult, since most of their resources which came from the Methodist Church and other benevolent organisations were  stored in those rooms.

According to Rev. Sey, the timely intervention of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service saved a near  disastrous situation.

‘’I thank the Almighty God that no lives were lost on that fateful day, and I hope NGOs and other benevolent organisations that have the welfare of children at heart will come to help to rebuild the apartments,’’ he stressed.

The Methodist Rafiki Village started as a partnership project between the Methodist Church of Ghana and the Rafiki Foundation of the USA. It officially started operating in December 2007,  with six children.

The village currently has 35 children who are mostly orphans brought in from Cape Coast, Akim Oda and northern parts of the country.

The village currently runs a school which has enrolled about 80 pupils, out of  which 35 come from the Rafiki Village and the rest come from Winneba and its surrounding villages. These children are fed by the school and also provided with health care.
