Shop owners, traders educated on energy conservation

Shop owners and traders at the Rawlings Park in Accra have been advised to turn off all electrical appliances at the close of business to conserve energy.

In addition, they have been asked to contract certified electricians to conduct all forms of electrical works for them and also desist from the practice of moving meters from one place to another.

The advice was given at a durbar organised by the Power Queens Group of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in collaboration with the Accra East and West district offices, also of the ECG, by the Public Relations Officer of the Accra East District, Mrs Grace Garshong.

The objective of holding the durbar was to educate traders and shop owners on the need to conserve electricity.

According to her, the practice where meters were moved from one location to another without informing the ECG resulted in the company losing vital documents and records.

Mrs Garshong said meters were registered according to a particular district or region and that, “moving the meters around made it difficult to track them should a fault be detected or for them to be put in order.”

She urged them further to avoid illegal connections and report any persons engaged in any act against the law to the authorities since such activities affected ECG transformers, leading to cuts in electricity.

The National President of the ECG Power Queens Club, Mrs Rosemond Asamoa-Frimpong, urged traders to not use middlemen in securing electricity meters.

She encouraged them to visit ECG offices anywhere for assistance and explanation relating to the processes involved in acquiring meters.
