Singapore names orchid after President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has been honoured in Singapore with an orchid hybrid named after him at the National Orchid Garden.

The flower, officially called “Vanda John Dramani Mahama,” was unveiled on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, during his visit to the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

The announcement was made by Jubilee House in a statement posted on Facebook.

Officials of the National Orchid Garden explained that the naming forms part of the “VIP Orchids” collection, a tradition of recognising visiting heads of state, heads of government and other distinguished guests.

President Mahama signed the visitors’ book and was briefed on the history of the Garden as part of his tour.

The statement said the practice of naming orchid hybrids after leaders reflects diplomatic goodwill and Singapore’s cultural heritage.

Orchids are also seen as symbols of resilience and transformation, echoing the country’s development.

The “Vanda John Dramani Mahama” now takes its place among floral tributes to other global leaders who have visited the Gardens, underscoring Singapore’s use of horticulture as a tool of diplomacy and international friendship.
