SSNIT chases employers for non-payment of contributions

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) is on the heels of employers who refuse to pay the social security contributions of their employees.

Reports reaching the Trust indicate that some companies, including those of expatriates, have consistently refused to pay the pension contributions of their employees as required by law.

To that end, the Trust has set out a number of strategies aimed at bringing recalcitrant employers to book.

The Director-General of the SSNIT, Dr John Ofori-Tenkorang, told the Daily Graphic in an interview in Accra that “the Trust is poised in ensuring that employers pay what is due workers to the Trust.”

Contact numbers

Dr Ofori-Tenkorang urged affected employees to either call or send text messages to 050 00003050.

He said whistleblowers could also send Whatsapp messages to the same number.

Additionally, informants could also send their complaints to 0302 611622 or visit the Trust’s Facebook page and follow the hashtag #SSNITGhana, Dr Ofori-Tenkorang said.

“I wish to assure whistleblowers that their identities would not be revealed. Our focus is geared towards ensuring their interests are catered for by their employers,” Dr Ofori-Tenkorang stressed.

He indicated that the doors of SSNIT were opened 24/7 to all manner of complaints and further assured that all issues brought before the Trust would be tackled decisively to the satisfaction of contributors.

Payroll cleansing

Meanwhile, the Trust is embarking on an exercise to clean its system of 8,366 pensioners who have failed to comply with directives to register biometrically.

The exercise is aimed at protecting the fund from being financially abused by non-existent retired workers.

Out of the number, 6,129 are between ages 72 and 79; 1,851 are from age 80 to 89 while 386 are 90 and above.

So far, the names of 386 pensioners have been deleted from the SSNIT payment system.
