Strong political will, Science-backed policies key to climate solutions – Prof. Browne Klutse
Ghana's first female full Professor of Physics, Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, has emphasized that climate change extends beyond science, deeply influenced by policy and politics, and demands immediate action.
In her inaugural lecture, the climate policy expert warned that the world is approaching the critical 1.5°C temperature rise threshold, which could trigger extreme weather events, food shortages, and widespread displacement.
She also pointed out Africa's significant underrepresentation in global climate discussions, despite the continent being one of the most vulnerable regions to the impacts of climate change.
Prof. Browne Klutse, who doubles as the Ag. CEO of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), stressed that politics often hinders climate action, citing how global decisions have disrupted African initiatives.
She argued that Ghana must take ownership of its climate policies rather than relying on external aid, calling for government investment in research and sustainability.
To protect the planet, the Ag. CEO of EPA called for urgent, science-backed policies and strong political will. She warned of irreversible tipping points and urged leaders to adopt data-driven strategies in agriculture, water and energy, while investing in climate technologies to secure the future.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, in her chairperson’s remarks, highlighted Prof. Browne Klutse’s distinguished career and her significant contributions to climate science, policy and advocacy. She acknowledged Prof. Browne Klutse as a leading researcher in this field and commended her for bringing an “African voice” to global climate discussions.
She also praised her interdisciplinary approach that integrates physics, policy and politics to drive meaningful climate adaptation and mitigation.
The Vice-Chancellor further underscored the importance of translating scientific knowledge into actionable policies and political commitments.
The lecture was attended by the Vice-President of the Republic, H.E. Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, along with Members of Parliament, senior officials, faculty, staff and students of the University, as well as family members and traditional rulers from the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese Traditional Area and Constituency.
