SWESCO 1998 group presents PPE to alma mater

The 1998 past students of Swedru Senior High School (SWESCO) have presented quantities of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to management of their alma mater to help fight the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

The items worth GH₵8,500 included two automated hand washing tanks, five boxes of liquid soap, 1,600 nose masks, a box of hand sanitizer, fifty quantities of tissue paper, among other items.

Presentation

At a short presentation ceremony to hand over the items to the management of the school on Saturday, August 1, 2020, the President of the group, Mr Ebenezer Mantey Oduro said that the gesture was to compliment efforts of the government to stem the spread of the virus.

He noted that although the government had supplied some quantities of PPE to control the spread of the virus in the school, it was woefully inadequate, hence their donation to augment the efforts of the government to combat the virus.

He mentioned that as past students, it was incumbent upon them to support their former school in these difficult times to be able to prevent the spread of the pandemic among the staff and current students.

“Obviously, this gesture is our widow’s mite to our former school which had transformed us into useful citizens in the society”.

He admonished the students to strictly adhere to the safety protocols outlines to fight the virus since they were the only measures through which they could protect themselves against contracting the deadly virus.

Congratulation

Mr Oduro further congratulated the new headmistress, Ms Golda Esi Andam on her recent appointment as the first old student to head the school, saying that “indeed your appointment is a great honour to the past students which would catapult SWESCO into greatness”.

“There is no doubt that your new portfolio is a herculean one and we know that you are capable of transforming SWESCO, the first Ghana Education Trust(GET) School established by Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah in 1959” he said.

He assured the school authorities that their year group would continue to mobilize both material and financial resources to address some of the pressing needs of the school, saying that “government alone cannot shoulder the challenges confronting the school and that as past students they were duty-bound to contribute their quota towards the growth of the school.

He further admonished the final year students, the first batch of the free SHS policy to take the ongoing West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) to pass with distinction to justify the introduction of the policy.

Gratitude

For her part, the headmistress, Ms Andam expressed management’s extreme gratitude to the group for coming to the aid of their former school in these trying times to be able battle the pandemic.

She called on the students to continue to make significant and critical contributions towards the progress of the school since the government was overstretched in dealing with the myriad of challenges confronting the school.

Also present were Mr Seth Yeboah, secretary to the group, Mr Kadir Munkaila and Richard Appiah, both members as well as some staff and students of SWESCO.
