The items included baby foods, diapers, disinfectants, detergents and feeding bottles meant for children at the home aged six to 19 months.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony at the home last Saturday, the Northern  Regional Chairperson of UNICOF, Ms Elizabeth Azumah Mbii, said the regional chapter of the union was motivated to present the items to the home for the upkeep of the inmates.

She added that the climax of the celebrations would be in October this year.

The Northern Regional Industrial Relations Officer, Bro. S. D. Wamzam, said the anniversary, which is on the theme: "Re-organising for productivity and job security,” was not only for making merry but was also an occasion for the organisation to take stock of past activities and plan ahead.

He said the union considered children as potential members; hence the decision to come to their aid to enable them to grow and realise their dreams.

The head of the home, Madam Augustina Quainoo, who received the items, thanked the union and said she was hopeful that the donation would go a long way to supplement the needs of the children.

History of home

In a brief history of the home, she said it was established by the government in 1969 as a foster home for the less privileged children in the society. She said the home had 24 children  aged six to 19 months.

Madam Quainoo said the children were brought in from the Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service and the Department of Social Welfare.

She said the home catered for abandoned children, orphans, children of imprisoned and mentally challenged mothers and children who had been trafficked and those from abused homes.

She said the home needed a lot of financial assistance to enable it to cater for the health needs of the children and to pay utility bills. According to her, the home spends about GH¢200 on electricity (prepaid) every month.

Madam Quainoo appealed to other corporate and civil society organisations to come to their aid.
