Update: 12 Killed in Bimbilla as butcher groups disagree over meat for regent

The death toll in the clashes between two butchers’ groups at Bimbilla in the Nanumba North District in the Northern Region last Thursday has risen to 12.

A seven-year-old boy and seven others were confirmed dead yesterday.      

The names of five of the dead have been given as Rashak Mohammed, 18, Hamza Abass, 30, Mustapha Mubarak, 7, Sulemana Iddrisu, 40, Sulemana Damba, 57, Alhassan Baako, 18, Illiasu, 34, and Mohammed Alhassan.

The identities of four others are yet to be established.

The clashes were precipitated by the refusal of one group to follow the tradition of presenting its share of meat to the regent of Bimbilla.

The Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr Ebenezer Tetteh, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic, said the number of people reported to have been injured had increased from nine to 20.
