The addition brings the total number of fire engines in the region to 20.

The fire tenders include, one specially designed with the mechanism to detect gas leakage, which has been assigned to the Atuabo gas processing plant while the remaining would be assigned to other districts in the northern and southern parts of the region to be combat-ready for emergencies, be they fire outbreaks or road accidents.

Before handing over the equipment, the Western Regional Minister, Paul Evans Aidoo said the arrival of the new fire tenders would pave way for the construction of fire stations in some districts that hitherto had none while government worked to add more.

The arrival of the new tenders, he said, would help in improving on the response time in emergencies.

After the discovery of oil and increased domestic and commercial use of liquefied petroleum gas, the minister said government decided to proactively equip the National Fire Service to carry out its mandate.

The minister said government was aware that “Firefighting, being a skilled profession, requires the availability of all necessary equipment so that the firemen can quickly and efficiently put out the fire.”

Mr Aidoo said aside the fire tenders, government had also added other auxiliary firefighting equipment to ensure that the Service not only responded timeously to emergencies but was also able to save the situations.

The minister said since 2011, government had put in place plans aimed at ensuring public safety in all the districts.
