The Acting Medical officer at the hospital, Emmanuel Srofenyo, who confirmed the incident to Citi FM, said his outfit was keenly monitoring the disease to prevent a possible spread in the region.

The outbreak of another strain of meningitis, Pneumococcal Meningitis, has so far claimed about 50 lives around the country, sending health authorities scuttling for help while the entire nation remains on high alert.

“What we have confirmed is meningococcal, not the pneumococcal type. That is also quite a serious condition but the patient is responding to treatment and the condition is fine now,” Srofenyo explained.

Until the present outbreak, Ghana has anually recorded Celebrospinal Meningitis strain, usually an inflammation of the meninges of both brain and spinal cord.
