The Deputy Chief Executive for Operations at the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, has announced that the Authority will introduce updated tariffs for healthcare services and medicines in the coming weeks.
The measure, he said, is intended to ease the financial burden on patients and further strengthen the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Speaking at a Technical Workshop on New Data and Evidence for Primary Health Care Strengthening, Dr Djokoto explained that the revised tariffs are aligned with current economic realities and are expected to significantly reduce out-of-pocket payments for NHIS members.
He appealed to healthcare providers to support the rollout, highlighting the critical role of accurate facility-level data, including expenditures and operational costs, in shaping the tariff structure and informing strategic purchasing decisions.
Dr Djokoto reaffirmed the NHIA’s commitment to expanding coverage and enhancing access to quality healthcare nationwide. He noted that the upcoming reforms form part of a broader agenda to promote efficiency, transparency, and financial protection for all Ghanaians.
Also addressing participants, the World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Dr Robert Taliercio, commended the ongoing reforms. He described the rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare programme and the implementation of the Network of Practice model as a pivotal step in strengthening Ghana’s health sector.
“This process demands evidence-informed policymaking and considers the voices of patients, providers, and communities,” he said.
