Kumasi NPP to demonstrate against ECG

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Bernard Antwi Bosiako, is rallying support from party faithful to demonstrate against the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on Wednesday for the introduction of new prepaid metres.

He alleged that the region had become the dumping place of unwholesome products and policies that worsen the lives of the people.

Mr Antwi Bosiako, fondly called Chairman Wontumi, said the new metres were meant to rob the people of their dwindling income and to worsen their living conditions.

Listing a litany of allegations in Kumasi last Saturday at an unplanned convocation, the chairman said the introduction of the new metres was a clandestine way of increasing tariffs and collusion between ECG and the government to punish the people in the region for not voting for the ruling party.

But the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Manager of ECG, Mr Erasmus Baidoo, told the Daily Graphic the chairman's comments were unfortunate 'because it appears he was not properly educated and briefed on the introduction of the  metres.'

Corroborating what some clients told the paper, Mr Baidoo said the metres, which had been piloted in some parts of the Eastern Region and other parts of the Ashanti Region, would rather ease the pressure on people and make them more responsible.

'The new metres have proven to be more efficient and cost effective to lessen the burden on consumers,' he said.

Already, Chairman Wontumi’s announcement has spread like bush fire as party people gear up to hit the streets on Wednesday.
