Provisional results confirm Bawumia as NPP’s 2028 flagbearer

Former Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has secured the New Patriotic Party’s presidential nomination for a second consecutive time, following provisional results from the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday.

Provisional figures released from the National Collation Centre at the Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters in Accra project Dr Bawumia as the clear winner, with 110,643 votes, representing 56.5 per cent of the total valid votes cast.

With the result crossing the required 50 per cent threshold, the outcome eliminates the need for a run-off and confirms Dr Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.8 per cent, while the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, came third with 36,303 votes, accounting for 18.5 per cent.

The Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, polled 1,999 votes, representing 1.0 per cent, while former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyepong, secured 402 votes, amounting to 0.2 per cent of the valid votes.

In all, a total of 195,901 valid votes were cast in the primary, with 561 ballots rejected.
