There’s job to be done — Jordan Opoku

The skipper of the local Black Stars, Jordan Opoku ,says the job is not yet done after their 1-0 win over Congo Brazzaville in their opening game of  CHAN 2014 tournament last Monday.

A solitary strike by Theophilus Anobaah earned the Black Stars the slim win at the Free State Stadium .

Ghana is now well positioned to clinch an early qualification from Group C ahead of their second game against Libya who outclassed Ethiopia last Monday.

 Opoku choses to remain focussed on the job at hand even though he  admits that the victory has sent confidence soaring in their camp.  

 “We didn’t know much about our opponent in the first game and therefore we needed a strong mentality to sail through,” he said.

“It is important to win the first game in a tournament to boost your morale and confidence going forward.

“It doesn’t mean we should be complacent, we should remain focused for the job is still not yet done.”

The Stars were propelled by sheer luck to notch a vital win over an impressive Congo Brazzaville side, but Coach Maxwell Konadu was delighted at the victory saying it would serve as a tonic for the team’s next game against Libya on Friday.

The Ghanaians had to rely on a first half fortuitous ball from Theophilous Anorbaah which deflected off  a Congolese defender into the net.

 “I think the boys have done very well for winning this game considering how far we’ve come,” said Konadu.

“With this win, the team’s confidence will soar and the boys will be in good spirits for our next match.

We will qualify if we win our next match and therefore we will put in every hard work necessary to beat Libya at all cost”, he added.

The Black Stars  have been under intense pressure as they attempt to clear the pessimism around their campaign, particularly as they seek to erase the bitter memories of the 2011 debacle in Sudan when they lost all their group games and eventually bowed out of the competition in disgrace.

The team is now eyeing another win against Libya who were particularly brilliant in their game. 

And Konadu believes the victory the team earned last Sunday has put them on the right track and they would  build upon it in their next game against Libya.
