Brazil odyssey turns fiasco for supporters

The hopes of about 70 Ghanaian supporters, including boxer Ayittey Powers and some young men and women from organised supporters groups, to enjoy an unforgettable World Cup experience in Brazil turned a mirage last Thursday as they arrived in Brasilia hours after the Black Stars had suffered elimination from the 2014 FIFA World Cup following a 2-1 defeat by Portugal.

The disappointed group who were led by government officials, including Kojo Adu-Asare, a former MP for Adenta, could not watch a single match live and had to make another long journey home after spending two nights in Brazil.

The disappointed fans were later met at their hotel by the outgoing Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah.

Narrating their abortive World Cup odyssey, Abraham Nkansah (Apiurugu Chakapama), president of Die Hard Supporters Union, attributed their delayed arrival in the Brazilian capital to the chartered Congolese aircraft on which they travelled.

He said the aircraft had to transit in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and another destination for refuelling, which delayed their arrival in Brasilia, adding that the group were in Brazilian airspace when they heard about Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Portugal.
