The Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Myriam Montrat, has assured football fans that Canada is fully prepared to welcome the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the country will co-host with the United States and Mexico.
Speaking ahead of the World Cup draw in Accra last Friday, she revealed that Canada had finalised plans for the introduction of a direct flight route to Toronto beginning in June 2026 to facilitate travel for fans.
“We are excited to welcome the world to Toronto and Vancouver in June and July 2026. As a matter of fact, Canada has announced that there will be a direct flight to Toronto starting this June,” she stated.
H.E. Montrat emphasised that the three host nations were closely coordinating key operational areas to ensure a seamless experience for supporters travelling to North America.
“On the diplomatic side, our three nations are coordinating visas, consular services, security and public relations. We are proud to be working so closely together to reinforce trilateral collaboration to deliver a seamless tournament experience,” she added.
She further noted that Canadians view the hosting of the World Cup not only as a celebration of football but also as an opportunity to expand economic partnerships, drive innovation and open new markets.
Meanwhile, the Mexican Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Norma Ang, described the tournament as a unique opportunity for Mexico to showcase its vibrant culture and traditions to visitors from around the world.
She said the three host cities—Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey—were well advanced in preparations regarding security, logistics and transportation.
Ambassador Ang also confirmed that the Embassy of Mexico in Accra was preparing to support the increasing number of Ghanaians seeking information and applying for visas ahead of the competition.
She stated Mexico’s commitment to ensuring that the World Cup leaves a positive, long-lasting legacy by building fields across communities and organising tournaments for everyone, including persons with disabilities.
“In 2026, the government of Mexico aims for this World Cup to leave a lasting legacy and to be remembered as a socially inclusive event.
New community fields will be built, and tournaments organised for girls, boys, youth, older adults and people with disabilities. The Embassy of Mexico is ready to support similar events in Accra,” she noted.
Both envoys reaffirmed their countries’ readiness to host the world and deliver a memorable, safe and inclusive tournament experience for all fans, including those travelling from Ghana.
