Eat more local dishes to compete favourably - KAMA boss tells athletes

For our sports personalities to perform above average and compete favourably with their counterparts at the international level and win trophies for themselves and Ghana, they should be encouraged to eat more local dishes which are full of vitamins and minerals, the chief executive of KAMA Group of Companies; Dr. Michael Agyekum Addo , told the Graphic Sports in an interview in Accra on Wednesday.

Identify talents

“Our Coaches should take the initiatives to identify talents in the various sports disciplines and motivate them to fall in love with our local dishes such as plantain, cocoyam, and yam with ‘nkontomire, garden eggs and ‘agushie’ stew among others.

“This is because such local dishes are filled with all manner of vitamins and minerals that provide adequate energy to build   stamina”.

Explaining further, Dr. Agyekum Addo, who is a pharmacist by profession said : “The present generation seems to have developed much appetite for foreign dishes, many of which are full of chemicals. This is not good for their health, so coaches should be at the forefront of launching a crusade that will encourage their boys and girls to crave for our local dishes”

Health is wealth

He said it was equally important for coaches to put their sports personalities through periodic medical examinations.
“It is good to conduct regular medical checks of sports personalities, such as their  blood pressure, sugar levels,  eye sights, as well as dental,  prostrate and urine among others, just to ensure that they are healthy before they undertake any competitive game,” Dr. Agyekum Addo advised.

“Health is wealth, and the challenge of the global economy in the 21st century is that, it is sports personalities endowed with good health who stand the chance of winning trophies that come along with huge prize monies,”  he observed

He said the 21st century had been identified as a  period with entrepreneurial revolution, when society would  pay huge sums of monies to those with unique talents in sports.

“Ghana can reap a lot from sports if our coaches develop the hunger of hunting for talents and consciously grooming them. This is because the nation is well endowed with many untapped talents,” he said .

He said it was, therefore, important for our coaches to take advantage of the situation by being creative enough to identify and groom talents to be world class athletes.
