Ghana to face Nigeria in London as Unity Cup returns in 2025
Football fans are set for an electrifying showdown in London this May, as Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago compete for The Unity Cup 2025.
Dubbed "The Best in the West – The Afro Classico Contest," the four-nation tournament will feature thrilling West African and Caribbean derbies, culminating in the crowning of the Unity Cup champion.
Clash of rivals in semi-finals
The competition kicks off on Tuesday, May 27, with a historic Caribbean battle as Trinidad & Tobago’s Soca Warriors take on Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz in what is being called the first-ever TriniJam clash on UK soil.
On Wednesday, May 28, African giants Ghana’s Black Stars will reignite their fierce rivalry with Nigeria’s Super Eagles in a West African showdown that promises high drama.
Both winners will advance to the final on Saturday, May 31, while the losing teams will battle for third place earlier on the same day.
Nigeria eyeing third title, but Ghana pose a threat
Having won the Unity Cup twice, Nigeria enter the tournament as favourites, backed by their higher FIFA ranking and recent form. However, history suggests a tough contest, as Ghana previously stunned the Super Eagles with a 4-1 victory the last time they met in London.
Jamaica, meanwhile, will seek revenge for their previous one-goal loss, making the Caribbean derby just as intense.
Organisers excited for a global football showcase
Speaking on the return of the tournament, Rotimi Pedro of AfroSport, the event’s organisers, expressed his excitement: "I am proud to announce that The Unity Cup is back. It has been a long road to revive this important community event, and we are happy that fans of African and Caribbean football will get to see international football of the highest calibre at The Unity Cup 2025."
His colleague, Andy Howes, Co-Director of AfroSport, highlighted the tournament’s significance: "The Unity Cup is a tournament that really does evoke the often-used phrase 'an event that goes beyond sport.' But with the array of elite stars and the profile of the teams involved, this event is not only important in terms of its cultural significance but also reflects the growing commercial importance of African and Caribbean football, as well as the growing demographic of Black football fans within English football."
