Judoists mark Japanese Week

The nation's finest judo and karate practitioners climaxed the Japanese Week Celebration with a display of competitive martial arts at the Accra Stadium.

The big winners in the two-day event dubbed; ‘Japanese Ambassador's Karate and Judo Championships’ were Commonwealth bronze medalist, judoka Razak Abugri, as well as female karateka specialist, Nadia Sackitey.

Abugri led the way in the men's judo 60-kilogramme category when he clinched gold after overpowering Jones Mintah in the final, while Bismark Yartey pipped Aldair Nyanga to third place.

Precious Yeboah won the gold medal in the women's judo open section, defeating Egena Asare, with Grace Anthonia beating Beatrice Kulevome in the bronze medal match.

Earlier, Dominic Agudoo won the men's 66kg category, defeating Juda Agborkey in the final. The bronze medals went to Abugiri Aziz and Fabian Williams. David Nutsugah beat Prosper Kudor to gold in the 73kg category, while Augustin Amentor and Rusman Russo won bronze medals.

The gold medal in the keenly-contested men's 90kg category was claimed by powerhouse, Abubakar Alhassan, who defeated Ibrahim Mumuni in the final, with Takashi Tadashi and Gordwin Dadi winning bronze medals.

In the karate-do contests, Nadia Sackitey saw off Humu Yusif to win the female Kumite gold, while Humu Yusuf was handed the female Kata gold as the only competitor in that category.

Emmanuel Agyei landed more kicks and hand strikes against Patrick Amakye to win the gold medal in the +75kg Kumite which also saw Adnan Basha beating Aku Sumda to the bronze medal.
